Your Monday Maintenance Tip: Seal a leaky radiator

Radiator-leak

Save the high expense of a new radiator by trying to seal a leak with a radiator sealer, such as Alumaseal from Gold Eagle Co. Available in powder or liquid form, the product circulates in the radiator until it gets to the hole, where it sets up and fills the hole upon contact with the air. Alumaseal may be used to stop heater core leaks as well.

Two Dodge Models Rank Highest in Their Segments In J.D. Power And Associates 2012 APEAL Study

  • Dodge Charger and Challenger ranked highest in their respective categories for second year in a row
  • Dodge is most improved of all industry brands in study
  • All returning Chrysler Group LLC brands improve over last year’s scores
  • Chrysler 300 finishes second behind Dodge Charger in “Large Car” segment
  • Fiat 500 finishes second in “Sub-Compact Car” segment in its study debut

2012-07-26_1621

Chrysler Group LLC today announced significant improvement in J.D. Power and Associates’ U.S. Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study™. All Chrysler Group brands, except FIAT, which makes its study debut, have improved scores over last year’s results. The Dodge brand was the most improved in the industry, increasing 21 points. The Ram brand improved with a 19-point increase.

The Dodge Charger ranked highest in the “Large Car” segment and the Dodge Challenger topped the “Midsize Sporty” segment. This was the second year in a row both vehicles ranked highest in their respective classes.

“This year’s study results are a clear indication that Chrysler Group’s focus on quality, design and performance is being recognized and appreciated by customers,” said Doug Betts, Senior Vice President – Quality, Chrysler Group. “We listen to our customers and continually implement changes to our vehicles to meet, and exceed, their needs.”

The Chrysler 300 finished second in the “Large Car” segment behind the Dodge Charger, and the Fiat 500 made its study debut finishing second in the “Sub-Compact Car” category.

The APEAL Study examines how gratifying a new vehicle is to own and drive, based on owner evaluations of more than 80 vehicle attributes. Unlike IQS, which measures short-term quality, the APEAL Study identifies consumer likes and dislikes about their vehicle during the first 90 days of ownership, particularly regarding vehicle design, content, layout and performance.

The past, present and future of Mopar will be celebrated near Denver, Colo., as the brand hosts the 33rd Annual Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals at Bandimere Speedway in Morrison, Colo., July 20–22.

Mopar fans, racers and enthusiasts have been meeting at the Bandimere family’s scenic drag strip, set 5,800 feet high in the Rocky Mountains, for more than three decades. Mopar’s sponsorship of the event is the longest continuous-running sponsorship in the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, and serves as the opener of the 2012 NHRA Western Swing, which includes stops in Sonoma and Seattle.

“Thunder Mountain is the perfect place for Mopar to continue the celebration of our brand’s 75th Anniversary,” said Pietro Gorlier, President and CEO of Mopar, Chrysler Group LLC’s service, parts and customer-care brand. “The Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals have played a key role in building Mopar’s legendary racing tradition, and we look forward to visiting the Denver area once again and connecting with our friends at the NHRA, the Bandimere family and the passionate race fans that pack the drag strip.”

Mopar-powered drivers look to stay at the front of the field in Mopar’s flagship event. Mopar Dodge Avenger NHRA Pro Stock veteran Allen Johnson will be aiming for his sixth straight final-round appearance at Bandimere Speedway. The native of Greenville, Tenn., has been victorious in the Pro Stock class at Thunder Mountain three times in his career, with triumphs coming in 2007 and 2009-2010. Johnson has also earned the No. 1 Qualifier award three times at the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals.

Joining Johnson in the Pro Stock field will be four-time champion Jeg Coughlin Jr., who pilots the Mopar/JEGS.com Dodge Avenger. The native of Delaware, Ohio, has two career wins at Bandimere Speedway, including in 1999 over his brother Troy. Vincent Nobile will be in action in a Mopar-powered Dodge Avenger, with HEMI® engines built by Johnson’s J&J Racing team. V. Gaines, who also pilots a Mopar-powered Pro Stock car, will be in action at his home track.

Matt Hagan, the defending NHRA Funny Car champion, will sport special Mopar graphics on his Dodge Charger R/T. Hagan advanced to the finals last season during the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals. Joining Hagan at Bandimere Speedway will be his Mopar-powered Don Schumacher Racing teammates Jack Beckman, Ron Capps and Johnny Gray. Beckman and Capps have each earned Funny Car wins in Mopar’s headline event. A large contingent of Mopar-powered grassroots racers will also compete in a number of NHRA Sportsman classes at Bandimere.

Mopar’s popular display on Bandimere Speedway’s Manufacturers Midway will return for the 33rd Annual Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals. Fans have the chance to enter to win a variety of Mopar contests, check out hot new Mopar parts and amazing "Moparized" rides and purchase the latest in Mopar gear and apparel.

2013 SRT Viper GTS-R Set to Return to American Le Mans Series Competition at Mid-Ohio

Sr013_057vp

The 2013 SRT Viper GTS-R will make its first on-track race appearance Aug. 4 at the Mid-Ohio (Lexington, Ohio) Sports Car Course, SRT Motorsports officials announced today.

“We’re thrilled to return to the world-class competition in the American Le Mans Series with our flagship American supercar,” said Ralph Gilles, President and CEO – SRT Brand and Motorsports, Chrysler Group LLC. “The new SRT Viper GTS-R represents a rebirth for us on the race track. It epitomizes the best of what our new SRT performance brand represents and showcases the Viper’s natural affinity for road courses. Now the time has finally come to go head-to-head with the best sports car teams from around the world.”

SRT Motorsports has partnered with Riley Technologies, based in Mooresville, N.C., on the design-and-build process of the new SRT Viper GTS-R race cars. The team will compete in the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Challenge, a three-hour American Le Mans Series (ALMS) endurance race presented by Tequila Patron.

“Racing has been a significant part of the illustrious history of Viper,” said Beth Paretta, Director of Marketing and Operations – SRT Brand and Motorsports. “Wins on the track, and continued development of our street cars along with our new 2013 SRT Viper models are proof of those lessons learned. Now with our new race team and the launch of the GTS-R, we’re excited and proud to begin writing more chapters in the racing history of the Viper beginning at Mid-Ohio.”

Scott Atherton, President and CEO of the American Le Mans Series, hailed the return of the SRT Viper to the series as one of 2012’s top announcements.

“I don’t think it’s possible to overstate the significance of the SRT Viper returning to the top level of professional sports car racing,” Atherton said. “The Chrysler Group has a long, storied and very successful history of competing with the American Le Mans Series. The fact that they’re coming back concurrently with the introduction of the new production car and doing it simultaneously, we would be hard-pressed to come up with a better-case scenario. What a great way for the SRT Viper to come back to racing.”

Two identical SRT Viper GTS-R cars will compete in the production-based GT class in the series. The GT class consists of production-based, moderately modified two-wheel-drive race cars. The SRT Viper GTS-R cars will be competing against the Aston Martin Vantage, BMW M3 GT, Corvette C6.R, Ferrari F458 Italia, Lotus Evora and Porsche 911 GT3 RSR. The GT class cars share many styling similarities to their showroom brands and by series’ rules must have a minimum weight of 2,745 pounds. The cars produce between 450-500 horsepower with top speeds of up to 180 mph.

More than 30 SRT Motorsports team members were on hand for the most recent track test at Mid-Ohio.

“The decision to make our debut at Mid-Ohio is a result of the progress made with our testing program,” said Gary Johnson, Road Racing Manager – SRT Motorsports. “The car has shown steady performance. Each test has met and more often exceeded our expectations, so we’ll see how things go at Mid-Ohio and then make a decision about the rest of the 2012 season.”

Following the limited schedule this season, the SRT Motorsports team will compete full time in the series in 2013.

Three full-time drivers currently are signed to drive including Dominik Farnbacher, from Ansbach, Germany; Marc Goossens from Geel, Belgium; and Kuno Wittmer from Montreal. Ryan Hunter-Reay from Fort Lauderdale, Fla. will join the team for the longer endurance races. Additional driver and team announcements will be forthcoming.

Viper racing heritage
The Viper has enjoyed a successful racing heritage that began in 1996 with the first Dodge Viper racing entry, the original GTS-R, which earned five international GT championships and the 1997-1999 FIA GT championships. It also posted an amazing overall win at the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona in 2000 – the first for a production-based American car.

Viper finished one-two at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in GTS class in three consecutive years – 1998–2000 – and captured GTS class and driver’s championships in the American Le Mans Series in 1999 along with the Series’ class, manufacturer’s and driver’s championships in 2000 before retiring from the series.

The Dodge Viper Competition Coupe, introduced in 2003, delivered the next chapter of that history with its coupe-shaped carbon/Kevlar body and a track-ready chassis, based on the Dodge Viper SRT10. The Viper Competition Coupe continued the on-track prowess by capturing the 2004 SCCA Speed World Challenge GT title, championships in Formula D Drifting series in 2004 and 2006 and the British GT Championship in 2007 and 2008.

In 2010, the Dodge Viper Cup Series was founded using the limited-edition Dodge Viper ACR-X spec series cars. Now in its third year, the series has been renamed the SRT Viper Cup Series.

Your Monday Maintenance Tip: Keep leather from drying out and cracking

Leather cars seats are durable and don’t require a lot of maintenance. After a few years, however, the seats can become soiled. Use a leather cleaner to remove dirt and stains. Then apply a leather protectant formulated for pigmented or top-coated grain leather (the leather used for most leather car upholstery). Protectants will resist stains and make the upholstery easier to clean in the future. Choose a protectant that includes conditioners to keep your leather supple.

Dodge Brand Shares Story Behind Its Groundbreaking All-new 2013 Dodge Dart in First TV Ad

The Dodge brand reveals its recipe for the groundbreaking all-new 2013 Dodge Dart in a new 90-second commercial debuting Tuesday, July 10, during the Major League Baseball (MLB) 2012 All-Star Game broadcast on the Fox network.

“How to Change Cars Forever” is a rapid-fire “instructional” spot on how to make a world-class car today, providing an inside look into the Dodge brand’s approach to designing and engineering its much anticipated entry into the highly competitive compact car segment. The TV spot introduces the tagline, “New Rules,” which speaks to how Dodge is redefining what a compact car can be. It will be followed this summer by 30-second and 60-second versions airing on major broadcast and cable networks and in movie theaters as Dodge Dart vehicles arrive in dealerships nationwide.

A full, multifaceted marketing campaign will launch in September and will include additional TV spots, print and digital advertising running in major media outlets. The 90-second “How to Change Cars Forever” spot will continue to air in high-profile television events throughout the remainder of the year. The commercial was created by the Portland, Ore.-based advertising agency Wieden+Kennedy and can be viewed at Dodge's Youtube channel.

“Adding a dose of fun, creative license and Dodge brand humor, ‘How to Change Cars Forever’ captures the meticulous process of starting with a simple idea and developing it into a revolutionary new car, including the angst and pressure of a blank page, trials and errors of the early stages, and molding, shaping and testing the Dodge Dart until it was right,” said Olivier Francois, Lead Executive for Marketing, Chrysler Group LLC. “We wanted to provide a peek inside what it takes to bring a new car to fruition.”

The spot features the Jay-Z and Kanye West track, “No Church in the Wild,” from their “Watch the Throne” album, and it includes cameo appearances by a couple of athletes who are champions in their respective sports.

“With the all-new Dodge Dart, we started with a clean slate and the single vision of bringing a world-class vehicle to market that offers features and benefits never before found in a compact car,” said Reid Bigland, President and CEO – Dodge Brand. “Designed and engineered without compromise, the all-new Dart starts with a world-class architecture and DNA of Alfa Romeo combined with class-leading levels of safety, technology, roominess and customization. The end result isn’t just a new compact car, but a groundbreaking vehicle that deserves an equally impactful marketing campaign.”

Dodge is using high viewership programs and pop culture summer events to build momentum and interest in the Dart among key consumer groups, including young professionals who may be purchasing their first car and “boomers” who may be re-entering the compact car market looking for mid-size interior roominess with the affordability and price position of a compact car.
