Chrysler Group and United Way for Southeastern Michigan Serve Up More Than 100,000 Summer Meals in Fight to End Childhood Hunger

Company Volunteers Help to Close the Hunger Gap for Children Throughout Metro Detroit

Company_food_drive_2

  • One in five Michigan children struggle to access nutritious food
  • Thousands of Chrysler Group employees embrace challenge to end childhood hunger

This summer, Chrysler Group LLC partnered with United Way for Southeastern Michigan (UWSEM) to join in the fight against childhood hunger and raise awareness for underused summer meal programs throughout Detroit metro area communities. A variety of employee-supported initiatives, including volunteering at local food pantries, company and community food drives, and community summer food program events, served up more than 100,000 summer meals for hungry children.

“We couldn’t have achieved such success without combining forces with a company like Chrysler and other Detroit-based organizations,” said Eric Davis, Director, Food Initiative, United Way for Southeastern Michigan. “The fact that we can rally together and utilize our resources to ignite change in such a critical issue like childhood hunger shows the commitment of these organizations to Detroit and its surrounding communities.”

From June to August, thousands of Chrysler Group employees participated in a variety of initiatives throughout metro Detroit aimed at ending childhood hunger, including an on-line pledge to end hunger by sharing information through social media.

“The response to this challenge has been overwhelming,” said Nancy Rae, Senior Vice President- Human Resources, Chrysler Group LLC. “With 1 in 5 children across Michigan struggling to access nutritious food, childhood hunger is an issue that really hits home for the employees working in our plants and offices. It’s truly rewarding to see how their spirit of volunteerism and devotion to the cause has made a difference.”

Company and Community Food Drives
Through company-wide food drives and door-to-door collections in the Rochester Hills area, Chrysler Group employees collected 16 tons of non-perishable food – enough to prepare 28,000 meals to feed hungry children and families throughout metro Detroit. The food drives, held in partnership with the United Auto Workers (UAW), benefited local food pantries operated by Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan (Gleaners).

Weekend Backpacks Help Bridge the Hunger Gap
The Chrysler Foundation and Chrysler Group also partnered with Gleaners to fill and distribute 12,000 weekend backpacks with nutritious food (a total of 72,000 meals) for children who are at risk of hunger and malnutrition this summer. The backpacks, filled with sliced peaches, cut green beans, beef ravioli, spaghetti and meatballs, raisin bran cereal and shelf stable milk – enough food for about six weekend meals – help to bridge the hunger gap during the weekends when summer food service programs are not available.

Food, Friends and Fun
Some 1,900 children and adults attended summer “Food, Friends and Fun” block parties and were fed a free nutritious lunch. The block parties, which also featured music, games and other family-friendly activities, were created to remind parents about the free Summer Meals Program available to children – 18 and under. The UAW, UWSEM and Chrysler Group teamed up to create the events that were held during the month of August at various locations throughout the Detroit metro area.

“Truly, we are in a fortunate position –as a company and as individuals – to reach out to our neighbors, especially children, to help provide a degree of stability to their lives,” added Rae.

About United Way for Southeastern Michigan

Mopar® HEMI® Challenge Set for August 30–31 in Indianapolis

  • 2012 Mopar® HEMI® Challenge to once again feature $15,000 top prize
  • $18,000 total purse up for grabs for Mopar HEMI Challenge participants
  • Super Stock/A-HEMI (SS/AH) Mopar HEMI Challenge drivers to do battle for 12th consecutive year at Indy

Bu012_148ev

The 2012 Mopar® HEMI® Challenge will take to the track for the 12th consecutive year during the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis, Aug. 30–31. For the second straight year, $15,000 will go to the winner of the Mopar HEMI Challenge, which pairs Mopar-powered Super Stock/A-HEMI (SS/AH) competitors against each other in a high-stakes quarter-mile showdown.

The Mopar HEMI Challenge began as a one-race shootout at the 2001 Mac Tools U.S. Nationals, and returned to that format last year, after a number of seasons as a multi-event mini-series. The race features 1968 Dodge Darts and Plymouth Barracudas — the classic package cars that helped build the Mopar brand’s impressive reputation at the drag strip — engaged in quarter-mile battles.

“The Mopar HEMI Challenge continues to grow and build momentum each year,” said Pietro Gorlier, President and CEO of Mopar, Chrysler Group LLC’s service, parts and customer-care brand. “The NHRA Sportsman drag racers that compete in the Mopar HEMI Challenge are the backbone of the sport, and have a passion for the Mopar brand that they carry with them wherever they go. The Mopar HEMI Challenge is a great way to recognize their passion and dedication to the brand and the sport.”

“We are excited to have the Mopar HEMI Challenge event return as part of the tradition-rich Mac Tools U.S. Nationals,” said Eric Lotz, director of field marketing, NHRA. “It has become an important part of the event and a must-see for all sportsman racing enthusiasts.”

Mopar HEMI Challenge qualifying is set for Thursday, Aug. 30, with eliminations scheduled for Friday, Aug. 31. The Mopar HEMI Challenge final round will take place during Funny Car and Top Fuel qualifying rounds on Friday. Along with the $15,000 winner’s purse, $1,500 will be awarded to the runner-up, with $500 going to both the third and fourth-place finishers. The No. 1 Qualifier during the Mopar HEMI Challenge will also take home $500.

Charlie Westcott Jr., of Parma, Mich., was victorious over his father, Charlie Westcott Sr., at Indy in 2011, earning his fourth-career Mopar HEMI Challenge win at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis. The second-generation driver won the event for the first time in 2005 and repeated in 2006. The veteran driver was also victorious in 2008.

Bucky Hess won the inaugural Mopar HEMI Challenge at Indy in 2001. Richard Beshore claimed the top prize the following year, with Jerry Jenkins taking the win in 2003. Four-time NHRA Pro Stock champion Jeg Coughlin Jr. won the Mopar HEMI Challenge in 2004, while Rick Houser captured the 2007 edition of the event, with Charlie Westcott Sr. joining his son as an Indy winner in 2000. Jim Daniels took home the hardware in 2010.

12th Annual Mopar HEMI Challenge
The 12th annual Mopar HEMI Challenge is scheduled to take place Aug. 30–31 during the 58th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis, Ind. Your Monday Maintenance Tip: How to check your vehicle's oil level

Check-car-oil-level

To check your oil, let your car run for a few minutes, then park it on a level surface and shut off the engine. Open the hood and locate the oil dipstick. You're looking for two things here: the level of oil and how the oil looks. The oil should look brownish yellow and clean on the stick. If the oil is a dark color or there's a lot of dirt and grime in it, then you definitely need an oil change and oil filter replacement.

Browning DCJR got two 5-star reviews on Yelp over the weekend! Great job, team!

"Great experience.  It was time to replace my old vehicle and Chrysler seemed to have the vehicle I wanted.  I visited 3 dealers without finding a sales person who treated me like a personal, rather than a Dollar Sign.  I finally visited Browning Dodge and was helped by a very nice man who was quite honest with me.  They had the vehicle I wanted and with a little sticker shocked I went home to think about it.  A few days later I got a followup call and with no pressure he let me know they were willing to deal.  A few phone calls later and I was at the dealer buying a new Chrysler.  I want to thank the dealership for hiring people who know how to provide people with a new car, rather than hiring people who know how to extract money from people.  Great location, great staff, great price.  I will be buying my next vehicle from Browning Chrysler." - David H.

Ram Truck Brand Captures Beauty of Texas Landscape in Retro-inspired Print Ads Placed in Annual Hunting and Fishing Guide

Bu012_150ev_mid

Illustrative posters created in the 1930s and '40s to stir the public’s imagination for travel and adventure are the inspiration for a new series of print advertisements for 2013 Ram pickup trucks.

Four ads appear in the 2012-2013 Texas Parks and Wildlife Outdoor Annual Hunting and Fishing Regulations guide that will be distributed to more than three million avid Texas outdoorsman beginning in mid-August. The Ram Truck brand is the exclusive automotive sponsor of the guide.

The two full-page and two 2-page spread ads are similar in color theme and illustration style to the art deco Works Projects Administration (WPA) National Park Poster series created after the Great Depression to promote the natural beauty of America’s parks.

“This was the perfect opportunity to take a different creative approach,” said Olivier Francois, Chief Marketing Officer, Chrysler Group LLC. “The use of vintage type-styles, hand-rendered illustrations and muted color palettes create a nostalgic approach to advertising art that we hope will resonate with consumers just as the original posters helped romanticize each national park destination.”

The new Ram Truck ads feature illustrative renderings of the Lone Star state’s picturesque Rio Grande Valley, Balanced Rock, Enchanted Rock and Lighthouse Rock landscapes as settings for the Ram 1500 Mossy Oak Edition Outdoorsman, Ram 2500 Power Wagon, Ram 1500 Lone Star and Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn.

“Ram trucks are an essential tool of the trade for the avid outdoorsman,” said native Texan Fred Diaz, President and CEO – Ram Truck Brand and Chrysler de Mexico. “The ads make an impactful statement about the beauty of Texas, my home state, while showcasing features hunters and fishers need in their trucks, including a powerful HEMI® V-8 engine, towing capacity, all-terrain tires, and versatility, combined with interior styling and luxury.”

The Ram Truck brand’s agency-of-record, The Richards Group of Dallas, Texas, engaged Anderson Design Group (ADG) of Nashville, Tenn., to create the illustrated poster art. ADG is an award-winning, critically acclaimed team of artists recognized for reviving classic American poster art. The company is “as all-American as it gets” as everything they do is designed and printed in Nashville using the time-honored techniques of the old masters.

Jp012_053gc

The Jeep® Grand Cherokee, Dodge Charger and Dodge Challenger are winners of AutoPacific’s 2012 Ideal Vehicle Awards based on owners' ratings of their 2012 cars and trucks.

“Winning awards for Jeep and Dodge vehicles based on customer feedback is very gratifying,” said Doug Betts, Senior Vice President – Quality, Chrysler Group. “Recognition by the customers proves we take consumer input very seriously in all the vehicles we design and build at Chrysler.”

The Ideal Vehicle Awards are based on owner ratings of 15 key attributes of their 2012 vehicles after 90 days of ownership. Measures evaluated by customers include power and acceleration, ride and handling, interior roominess and cargo space. More than 75,000 vehicle owners were surveyed by AutoPacific and were asked if they would change characteristics of their vehicles.

Praised for its smoothness on-road, the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee claimed top honors in the Mid-Size SUV category. Jeep Grand Cherokee is the most-awarded SUV ever and delivers premium on-road performance while maintaining the Jeep brand’s legendary four-wheel-drive, torque-on-demand two-speed transfer case and towing capability. It offers a driving range of more than 550 miles, superb on-road ride and handling, a world-class interior cabin, more than 45 safety and security features, and a variety of advanced technology features.

The 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee is available with three 4x4 systems, and with either a 290 horsepower Pentastar 3.6-liter V-6 or an available 360 horsepower 5.7-liter V-8 engine.

According to owners, the 2012 Dodge Charger is the Ideal Large Car. Approximately 90 percent or more of Charger owners rated the Charger’s exterior size, passenger roominess, cargo space, ride and handling and ease of getting in and out of the vehicle as ideal. A great majority of owners, 80 percent or more, also appreciate the Charger’s interior lighting, driver’s seat comfort, tires, interior storage compartments and safety features.

In addition to its iconic Dodge styling and spacious, finely crafted, easy to access interior, the Dodge Charger offers performance that is unmatched in its class. Charger features the award-winning Pentastar 3.6-liter V-6 engine with an available eight-speed transmission that delivers the ultimate combination of power and fuel efficiency with 292 horsepower and up to 31 miles per gallon. It also features the available 370 horsepower 5.7 HEMI® V-8 engine.

It’s unlike any other car in the way that it allows customers to customize their classic American muscle car.

And to top it off, it gets 27 mpg on the highway and comfortably seats five. Challenger R/T takes things to all-new heights with a 375 horsepower 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 with six-speed manual or five-speed automatic and available paddle shifters.
